Should kids have time to get bored (at least a little) ?
What are you planning to do with your kids this summer?
I assume many kids will go to summer camp, I'd rather not have any fixed structured activities just because I feel that's what vacation is all about.
I remember my summer as free play, no schedules, no plans, just get the feel the day. Maybe I am not a very hip mom but I like to give them some time to learn how to fill their day without a set schedule.

Isn't it important for kids to know how to manage their time by themselves?

I have to admit most of the time I crave structure just because things tend to be crazy with my two right now with the ages being two and nine months. My daughter Olivia attended a semester of Kindermusik classes this spring and it was great. We are getting ready to do a 5 week summer class just once a week. It gives her a break from her brother Gabe and me too!!!

I'm all for structure for things that are good for you ie, meals, nap and bed times. My girl who will be two in a month seems to thrive on it too, though I must admit sometimes having an unexpected activity or event makes her happy and in turn makes me happy. 'All in moderation' as my Mom always said. Let kids be kids and enjoy having a stress free, less hectic world than adults. Life doesn't have to run that fast. Besides, kids are learning even if it's sitting and doing nothing! I know I like to just breathe and take in the day (not that it happens much anymore :) We are going to enjoy the weather and take it day by day and do whatever tickles our fancy!

As I work full time, my daughter now 5 years has been going to school / daycare sinc she was 17 months old. When we got a summer break, she got it too, but other than that she has been "working" full time like me.

This summer her grandparents are visiting us and will be staying with us for the whole summer. She is so excited about staying home for the whole summer. Initially I was planning on enrolling her for summer camps, etc to keep her busy, but then it struck me, like I crave for "no-schedule" time, she needs that too. So i let her do "nothing" for summer and let her manage her time the way she wants it. We will have 10 day vacation but other than that, she is FREE and both of us love the idea, as come Autum, we will be busy again.

Children definitely need down time. They need to learn how to make decisions about how to spend their time, and how to find something to do if they are bored. It is essential. Going to scheduled activities constantly is not good for them. A little bit of that is ok, but yes, vacation is a time for relaxing, not rushing around to a bunch of planned activities.
