My 4 1/2 month old having trouble taking naps, sleeping at night & taking bottle

My son, Adrian, was doing really well for awhile and sleeping through the night (5-6 hours) then 2 hours or so before we got up. For the last couple of weeks or so, he has been waking up every 2 hours or so. I have been pretty sleep deprived and recently got the stomach flu I think because I haven't been sleeping enough. We also haven't been able to get him to take a bottle (although he did take the bottle a little bit from my sister a few weeks ago). The problem with this was obvious when I was sick with the flu.

I've been reading lots of blogs and books and find that nursing him to sleep maybe isn't the best thing. The other things I was doing to get him to sleep was the swing and riding in the car. Again, a book says those should be the last resort ways. We haven't tried to put him in his crib yet too much, but know that we need to start teaching him to self soothe and go to sleep on his own soon. When we put him down, he generally cries right away or after a bit so I'm worried about trying to do it, but we'll try the Tracy Hoggs technique first. Another book says to put him down when he's drowsy but still awake, feet first, so when he wakes up he'll be in the same place he fell asleep in. Other readings have said to wait 20 min. until he's obviously in a deeper sleep and then put him down. We have tried to put him in the bassinet when he seems in a deep sleep but he wakes up right away. We don't want to do the cry it out technique, unless it's for a fairly short time.

We're feeling like failures due to the inability to get him to take naps, sleep well at night, and take a bottle. I've heard that it may be too late to teach him to take a bottle. Any suggestions, advice, experience would be most appreciated on any or all of these subjects.

hey mindy! my nine month old son is the same about naps! if he isn't being held for the whole half hour nap, he will cry when put down. I've tried laying him on his back in his crib (feet first, and then head first, nothing worked) I even tried putting him down on his tummy and his side but he seems to detect the change in height or heat or something...anyways, maybe it will get better as they grow older...about the bottle issue, does he take the bottle into his mouth at all? is there breast milk in the bottle or formula? what is the Tracy Hoggs technique?

Hi Melissa,
Thanks for responding. Things have been getting better. My husband helped me transition Adrian from co-sleeping w/ me to the crib and he is sleeping much better at nights. He just cut a tooth so that may have something to do w/ it. Sometimes he's sorta easy to put down for naps, but other times not. I think that it helps when I wrap a blanket around him and then lay him down so he's not laying on anything cold. Sometimes he stirs, but is so tired he keeps sleeping. Other times he gets mad and I have to pick him up again and try it again and can take 3 or 4 times sometimes. Someone suggested the Breastflow bottle and he has been taking that like a champ. I think the Tracy Hoggs technique is to let him fuss for a bit, come in and soothe him but don't pick him up, and leave. That doesn't seem to work with him...Good luck w/ your son!
