Antipsychotic drugs for children have taken off in the US on the back of a willingness to diagnose those with behavioural problems as having manic depression. Even children barely out of babyhood are getting a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, the modern term for the condition.

The chief symptoms are mood swings, which, however, are common in children of any age.

David Healy, an expert on bipolar disorder, said there were now 2.5 million American children on antipsychotics. However, the UK guidelines on the disorder, from the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, urge caution.

One drug which prompted concern was Risperdal, originally to be sold for children with "irritability" or difficult behaviour in autism. It was reviewed by experts for the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency because of "concern about the potential misuse of [it] as ... long-term chemical control". The drug's maker, Janssen-Cilag, though it won a licence for it, withdrew its application, citing differences with the authority. » original news

ScienceDaily (Mar. 25, 2008) - A new study published in the March/April 2008 issue of the journal Child Development finds that family wealth might partly explain differences in test scores in school-age children. The study, conducted by researchers at New York University, also found that family wealth is positively associated with parenting behavior, home environment, and children's self-esteem. » original news

Kids' allergies are nothing to sneeze at. A first-of-its-kind national survey shows that when kids suffer nasal allergy symptoms, everything from their sleep to their schoolwork suffers as well.

In the study of more than 1,000 families, parents of kids with allergies were twice as likely to say their children's activities were limited by their health, compared with parents whose kids didn't have allergies.

Nearly three-fourths of parents of kids with allergies said their children frequently or sometimes felt tired during allergy season. Two-thirds said their kids were irritable, and more than half said their offspring were downright miserable. » original news

About 14 million or nearly 18 percent of the United States' 79 million baby boomers will likely develop Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia in their lifetime, according to a new report released by the Alzheimer's Association.

The report, "2008 Alzheimer's Disease Facts and Figures," estimates that one in eight baby boomers will likely have the Alzheimer's, a degenerative brain disease characterized by severe memory loss and confusion.

The oldest baby boomers are turning 62 this year and are by definition entering the risk zone. According to Stephen McConnell, vice president of public policy for the Alzheimer's Association, age is the largest major factor linked with the disease. After turning 65, chances of developing Alzheimer's doubles every 5 years. » original news

Governor criticizes court requirement of a teaching credential and says he will move to protect practice.

By Seema Mehta, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
March 8, 2008

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called Friday for the reversal of a recent appellate court decision banning parents from educating their children at home if they lack a teaching credential. If the state Supreme Court fails to act, the governor vowed to push through legislation guaranteeing families' right to home school.

"This outrageous ruling must be overturned by the courts and if the courts don't protect parents' rights then, as elected officials, we will," he said in a written statement.

Schwarzenegger's comments about the ruling came as home schooling families and national conservative leaders expressed increased concerns over the practice that they believe every parent has a fundamental right to exercise. » original news

Study after study has failed to show any link between vaccines and autism, but many parents of autistic children remain unconvinced. For the skeptics, the case of 9-year-old Hannah Poling shows that they have been right along.

The government has conceded that vaccines may have hurt Hannah, and it has agreed to pay her family for her care. Advocates say the settlement - reached last fall in a federal compensation court for people injured by vaccines, but disclosed only in recent days - is a long-overdue government recognition that vaccinations can cause autism.

"This decision gives people significant reason to be cautious about vaccinating their children," John Gilmore, executive director of the group Autism United, said Friday.

Mr. Gilmore has filed his own claim that his son became autistic as a result of vaccinations. » original news
