not for us. we taught the kids a few signs, like please, thank you, and your welcome. i think it helped to bridge that time that they can't speak with being able to speak politely by sign. it taught manners even before they could speak. it was cool. they began speaking around 14 months

I don't think it would hurt their verbal communication at all. I think it would help them to understand differences in people. I would love to find a group where we could teach our little ones sign language. The classes that I have found are very expensive.

I am a speech pathologist and I can tell you that it has hurt some kids that I've worked with, especially boys. I've seen kids that are four still signing instead of speaking. I refuse to teach my son to sign. Don't do this ridiculous thing to your children. They DON'T NEED it! It is more for the parents than the kids. Start teaching your kids words instead of signs for words.

Teaching your children sign language in most cases actually encourages verbal communication. I have never seen a person use sign language with their young child instead of verbalizing. Rather they use the two together, helping the child add meaning to the new words being learned.

We taught our now 6 year old hundreds of signs. Some before and some during language development. And when he started speaking he started almost right in putting two words together. I think this was because he already had that concept from putting signs together before he could speak. His teacher says he is one of the most articulate kids she has ever had in her class.

I taught my now 3 year old to sign -simple words- when he was very young. He started talking around his one year birthday. He has no language delays and actually speaks better than most of the 3 year olds we know. Like a few other mothers said - we used the sign while saying the words, not the sign by it's self. I think teaching signing is a great thing for young kids.

It has been proven that teaching babies sign language, actually ENCOURAGES them to speak at a younger age. When used CORRECTLY, the baby can learn to put the word WITH the sign. We have used sign language with our 11 month old and it has helped us immensely and she is able to tell us what she wants rather than crying uncontrollably while we try to figure it out.

I have taught all three of my girls sign and the word together. They all now sign and use words. My middle child had a friend in her class who was hearing impaired and she was the only child in the class who could sign with him all the other's (3 and 4) had to be taught so they could talk and play with him. I feel it is very important to teach children. It is considered a second Language and is very useful in every where you go. There are sites on the net that can teach it as well. I use those to keep mine up to date so I can continue to teach my girls.
