Sad at daycare

Hi all,
My son is 2 3/4. We have put him in the same daycare for about two years now, and he still cries every time we drop him off. For a while, our sitter said as soon as my husband or I drive away he is fine. But today, she admitted that he really doesn't have a good time there. She said he is fine when it is just one on one with her and/or her husband, but he doesn't really play with the other kids.

He is an only child, so maybe he prefers their full attention. But how high maintenance is that? I want him with other kids, as my husband and I both know he needs the socialization.

Some other factors include the fact that he is only there for about 5-6 hours, 2-3 days per week. The other kids are there from 8-5, M-F. They practically live there. So maybe they are more comfortable there because they are more used to it? I don't know. I just feel awful now leaving him some place where he isn't happy. I love our sitter, and she came highly recommended, so I am certain it is not her that makes him unhappy. In other words, a different daycare may not solve this problem.

Well, I am putting this out there to hear from other moms, so your input is very welcome!
Have a great day!
Robin
